About halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco lies the Central Coast gem of Avila Beach. It’s a picture-postcard beach town with a pristine white-sand beach, a quaint strip of shops and restaurants, abundant trails for biking and hiking, and – during the summer months – a lively calendar of outdoor music events. The season opens each year on Memorial Day weekend with the annual Avila Beach Blues Festival, which over the years has featured greats such as John Lee Hooker and Etta James. Pair the blues with some wine tasting, a seafood dinner, and a soak in natural mineral springs, and you’ve got a fabulous weekend adventure! My article about Avila Beach and its Blues Fest appears in the May issue of Westways magazine.
