The actor and singer is reconnecting people with their food—starting by making it simpler for everyone to grow their own produce. It might be her most important work yet.

When Zooey Deschanel was pregnant with her first child, she began thinking more about the food she ate. A lot more.

She wanted her baby (daughter Elsie Otter, who was born in 2015) to be the healthiest she possibly could. So Deschanel started critically examining every meal and morsel.

At the time, “I was pretty healthy,” says Deschanel. “I mean, I thought I was. I just didn’t really know where my food came from. I would just go to a restaurant or I’d go to the store and I’d buy stuff. I had no idea who grew it.”

Her curiosity about the origins of the ingredients on her plate touched off a journey that ultimately led the Los Angeles-based performer—who’s best known for playing Jess in the long-running TV series New Girl, as well as for memorable roles in films like Elf and (500) Days of Summer—to take on a new role: crusader for local, sustainable food production.

Today, through efforts she’s helped spearhead, including The Farm Project and the Lettuce Grow hydroponic planter, the Hollywood star is lighting the way toward a consumer-driven revolution in the way our food is grown and sourced.

“It started from that little seed,” she says…

Auto racing legend Danica Patrick on how to take your dreams to the finish line.

The post Danica Patrick: Driven appeared first on Rachel B. Levin.

Auto racing legend Danica Patrick has used lessons learned on the racetrack to fuel new successes. Her ethos can help you take your dreams to the finish line too.

On a rainy December morning at her home in Scottsdale, Arizona, Danica Patrick was feeling rather happy about a flat tire.

If you know anything about Patrick—namely, that she’s widely held to be the most accomplished woman in the history of auto racing—it may seem unlikely that car trouble of any sort could please her. But the flat tire in question was not her tire. It belonged to a workout buddy who had been planning to drive to Patrick’s house for an exercise session but never made it due to the flat.

To Patrick, who earlier that morning had floated the idea of postponing the workout because she was feeling tired, the flat tire was a stroke of serendipity that allowed her to get some rest that she otherwise would have neglected. “I was like, ‘Wow, the universe just made that all so easy,’” she says.

No one could argue that the universe has made Patrick’s successes—during her racing career or in her roles as author, podcast host, and entrepreneur—come easily. She has a “can-do” attitude that’s helped her break through barriers, and her historic performances in races like the Indianapolis 500 and Daytona 500 are literal proof that reaching your goals requires putting your foot on the gas.

Still, for Patrick, the tire incident is just one small example of her belief that sometimes, to get what you want, you need to take your hands off the wheel and have faith that forces outside of yourself are working in your favor. She explains that when you tap into your innermost desires and make them known, “Things happen for you really quickly and easily, and manifest and work [themselves] out.”

Patrick’s formula for success—cultivated along the many twists and turns of her career—involves balancing “can do” with “let it go.” Her journey provides a roadmap for dreaming big, adopting a mindset to propel you forward, and creating the life you really want…

Andrea Hannemann (aka @EarthyAndy) resolved her intractable health issues by ditching processed foods and eating whole plant foods instead. Her 30-day challenge could be a game changer for you too.

When Andrea Hannemann started seeing stories about the healing powers of plant-based diets several years ago, she didn’t believe them. “I thought it was staged, you know—to see someone who looked at the top of their health with this huge plate of fruit in front of them,” she says. “I just thought, ‘How is that possible?’”

Today, after a dietary journey that transformed her health, Hannemann is one of the Internet’s biggest boosters of plant-based eating (to the tune of 1.2 million @EarthyAndy followers on Instagram)—and the radiantly healthy mother of three boys isn’t shy about posing with fruit to punctuate the point.

Indeed, the sumptuous photos of colorful produce and plant-based dishes on her IG feed make eating healthy look like a slice of paradise. It also doesn’t hurt that many are set against the swoon-worthy tropical backdrop of the beach town in Oahu, Hawaii, that she and her family call home.

With the recent publication of her first book, Plant Over Processed, Hannemann has compiled the rules of the 30-Day Plant Over Processed Challenge that helped her make the switch to a plant-based diet, along with 75 recipes that changed her life…

Taunee English is a whiz with numbers. She held a top-secret security clearance in the U.S. Navy as a cryptologic technician (aka Morse coder) and then worked in accounting and business management for a number of years before beginning her real estate career in 2008. Today, the award-winning Beverly Hills broker specializes in probate and trust real estate and uses her number-crunching acumen to help individuals and families create and protect their financial security with real estate. The sign behind her desk reads: “I’m a black woman business owner. I believe anything is possible. I see opportunities where others see impossibility.”

We caught up with English to learn more about her analytical approach to the business—and about how fighting racism in the real estate industry requires power in numbers.

The Stanford Anesthesia Summer Institute (SASI) helps high school and college students work toward meaningful careers in healthcare.

As a volunteer ski patrolman in the mountains near Lake Tahoe, Stanford Anesthesia Summer Institute (SASI) past participant Ryan Schmiesing encountered an injured skier with a broken clavicle, jumping into action. Applying the training he received in the outdoor emergency care course he took to qualify for ski patrol, he put her arm into a sling, strapped her into his toboggan, and skied her safely down the mountain for further care.

This experience was the first time the Mountain View, California, native directly cared for a patient, and he knew right away he didn’t want it to be the last. It’s a little nerve-wracking when you are on your own as a first responder, he says, adding, “But it also gives you a sense of pride and purpose.”

The senior at Archbishop Mitty High School in Mountain View had been leaning toward a career in health care for several years, but his experiences with patients as a ski patrolman solidified his interest. When Schmiesing learned that SASI included opportunities to more fully explore the patient-provider relationship — especially while working with an ePatient in a small-group capstone project — he decided to apply. “I realized, wow, this program offers a lot of experiences that people my age wouldn’t get otherwise,” he says…

Ivan Garcia is among the first graduates of USC’s expanded college-prep program, and now he’s a first-year Trojan. But he almost missed his chance.

Ivan Garcia held court whenever his family visited Chinese Friends, their favorite restaurant in Los Angeles’ Chinatown. Garcia’s mother, Laura, remembers how the little boy brought smiles to everyone’s faces in the restaurant when he spoke and sang songs in Mandarin with the staff.

“He spoke it without an accent,” she says, thanks to a Mandarin-language immersion program that he had attended since kindergarten.

Though the 18-year-old Garcia no longer remembers these encounters, his knack for language and communicating across cultures has stayed with him. He studied Mandarin until he was a high school sophomore and also took American Sign Language as a freshman. As he begins his first semester at USC, furthering his study of languages is in the college game plan, as are classes in anthropology, history and philosophy. On the horizon, perhaps, lies a career in immigration law.

Yet the talented young scholar might never have made it to USC — or any college at all — if he had not made a pivotal decision some seven years ago.

He took a chance he nearly passed up, and it changed his life…

How Kara Goldin turned her thirst for a healthy beverage into a multimillion-dollar company—and emerged as an entrepreneurial guru.

It’s an unusually brilliant October day in San Francisco when I arrive to Hint, Inc.’s headquarters on chic Union Street to meet with founder and CEO Kara Goldin. Sunny, clear, and 75 degrees: It’s just the kind of weather that makes Hint’s signature product—water flavored only with natural fruit—really hit the spot.

I sip a refreshing peach Hint as I wait for Kara in the outdoor “conference room,” which feels more like a posh backyard than a place of business. There are cushy wicker couches arranged on a carpet of artificial grass, one of Kara’s two Labrador retrievers naps nearby, and a small grove of lush trees filters the dazzling afternoon sunlight.

Kara has just spent the morning across the Bay speaking to engineering and business students at the University of California, Berkeley, about entrepreneurship. And given Hint’s astounding growth since she launched the company in 2005—it’s now the largest non-alcoholic beverage company in America that doesn’t have a relationship with behemoths like Coke and Pepsi—as well as Kara’s many accolades (named one of Fortune‘s Most Powerful Women Entrepreneurs and Forbes‘ 40 Women to Watch over 40), it’s not surprising that she’s in demand on both the college and corporate speaking circuits, giving talks two to three times a week.

Kara’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs—or to anyone who tunes into one of her lively social media feeds—is less about the nuts and bolts of business than about the power of staying true to oneself: Find purpose and meaning in what you do, believe in your ideas and ability, and tune out the naysayers you meet along your path. It’s a genuine message that’s true to her own story.

“I never once said, ‘One day I’m going to start my own company,'” she says. “The best companies today, no matter what category they’re in, are ones where people saw a problem and then they decided to go tackle it. They had some creativity, some curiosity, some tenacity, and they decided to go and do it.”

And that’s precisely what happened along Kara’s journey to changing the way America hydrates…
